About the Author
Mark Kelly was born in Boston, Massachusetts on February 29, 1956 to Andrew and Rita Kelly. The second oldest of four children, Mark grew up with a passion for football, which he played throughout high school and college. His greatest achievements are his own four adult children: Joshua, Jared, Jessica and Jordan. He resides in Dedham, Massachusetts.
When Mark was as young as five years old, he knew that the world of engineering was for him. He helped on family building projects from a young age; pouring concrete, digging holes, installing sheetrock, painting and, of course, roofing. Mark's drive, hard work and focus carried him through college, where he worked several jobs, including roofing lab technician, roofing inspector and city street surveyor.
After college, Mark was hired by UPS as a Regional Project Engineer, handling small, medium and large projects, as well as construction and conveyor systems. He went on to become the UPS expert on roofs, and worked out of their national engineering office in New York before moving to UPS headquarters in Greenwich, Connecticut for special assignments. Here he worked on the UPS national audit team and traveled between facilities throughout the US. In this time Mark achieved his OSHA nationwide instructor license.
On his return to Boston, Mark worked at one of Boston's large engineering and architectural firms. When invited to become a partner in the firm, which by then had a staff of 400, he turned them down. Now with a young family, he opted instead to start his first business: Kelly and Stewart Roofing. He became licensed in roofing, buildings for general construction and asbestos removal, and a licensed asbestos consultant. By 1990, the company had become the largest private sector roofing company in Massachusetts.
From managing an operation of 150 men, Mark Kelly moved back to consulting in 1991, this time as a building envelope designer. He landed the largest roof design contract in New England history when he made a successful bid to consult and supervise the reroofing of 50 schools and 7 DPW buildings, in Massachusetts.
